Elizabeth Bindern Painted Dower Chest

Elizabeth Binder was born in 1781 in New Hanover, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Jacob Binder, an elder in the Falckner Swamp Reformed Congregation, a Lutheran church where she was confirmed in 1790. She married Paul Linzenbichler in 1807. After that, little is known of her or her husband. As the records of the congregation are very complete for the rest of the Binder family, perhaps the couple moved elsewhere. This chest retains its original brasses and untouched surface.

The importance of this chest is illustrated by its place in several prominent collections during its history, including William duPont and Forbes Ramsey.
