Frederick E. Cohen (1810-1858)
Circa 1845-1850
Oil on canvas

Cohen was one of the first painters practicing in Michigan.  Originally from England, he travelled to Detroit in 1837 via Canada and is listed in the Detroit directory of 1850 as a portrait painter.  Most of his known work are portraits of Detroit residents of local significance and he also painted panels for Great Lakes passenger vessels. A dashing self-portrait is in the collection of the Detroit Museum of Fine Arts.

During his lifetime he exhibited at the Gallery of Fine Art in Detroit in 1853 and the American Art Union in 1853.
